For this first issue the encounter seems to be a relevant topic. But it’s a vast subject. In a few lines the encounter according to White Hole.
The encounter is a story of confrontation. The confrontation with the difference. Differences generating identities. Identities making, enriched process.
As individuals we are evolving in an environment whose codes have been transmitted to us throughout our lives. This learning is continuous and often unconscious, it’s our environment that gives us the ability to decode and understand signal that we received. This way develops what could be called a mental territory that appears having limits. The encounter is the moment when these limits clash with others.
Territories meet, grow, shrink, mingle, then the horizon opens.
But the encounter requires a minimum of effort because we do not have codes of others, our eyes being directed by our believing and our knowledge, our look can be blind to the other. We must put aside our judgment, our values to open our eyes.
We must learn to create a free space where knowledge do not apply.
How to communicate without sharing the same code? The challenge is not so much to understand that to learn and exchange again and again.
Communicate with someone is trying to explain his idea as clearly as possible. In this process the first individual is brought to rethink his speech to make it understandable. He reinterprets. This is a first step of self-learning. The willingness to share, bring him to make one step back to « look » at his idea, taking it in his hands, rotate it, flip it, touch it as something new to take full consciousness of what he is giving away.
The second individual who receives this idea will feel different reliefs by manipulating it because his perception will be different, his hands were not formed in the same way as the first individual. From his perception and codes of its own, he will develop a new interpretation. It is a second step of learning through the others.
Communication is like a loop that grows and becomes more complex as new interpretations enter the circle.
Share opens new possibilities, develop a parallel structure that connects individuals, allowing them to build new codes.
For example, the Venice Biennale is a cultural and artistic event based on the meeting of different countries who gather around a theme. Why this gathering has always be so successful? The idea of exposing to represent a country it is not outdated at the time of “globalization”? The strength of this event is precisely to expose countries. Artists produce a network of interpretations of the same subject, a network wher we could physically circulate. Once assembled these interpretations form a landscape of current concerns of society at that time.
« The assumption that in the longer run we’re moving to ever more homogeneity, that cultural, religious, and political differences will be absorbed by this global melting pot of connectivity ans economic interrelations is being challenged by recent developments. At present it looks more like the global economic system itself needs these tensions and contradictions to fintion ; that « smooth » space is not a real option. »
